Expecting a Miracle

A Message from President Pro Tempore Greenway

An Offering for Kenya – Ethiopia

The Apostle Paul writes: “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-18)

Dear Friends of the Allegheny West Conference,

Greetings in the name of Jesus—who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ever ask or imagine! This is a truth I’ve repeatedly seen evidence of in the two years since the launch of the Global Methodist Church. The Lord is faithful!

One of the greatest life qualities we’re developing as individuals and congregations is living generously as we steward the gifts God’s given to us. Your faithfulness is inspiring!

Connectional Funding

Thank you for your faithfulness in connectional funding. This is our first-mile mission giving in the GMC. Thus far, we’ve received funding for 2024 from 408 of our 588 churches—and 76% of our projected connectional funding for the year! Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity. Please contact Herman Dick, our conference CFO, at hdick@alleghenywestgmc.org with any questions you might have about connectional funding.

Tornado Relief

Thank you for your faithfulness in responding to our special Tornado Relief offering for the Indian Lake Region. To date, we’ve received $125,000 for this special appeal, and are working with Pastors Cynthia Defibaugh (Hopewell GMC) and Bryan Meadows (Cornerstone GMC) to coordinate the accountable distribution of funds to those in need who are not covered by other resources. We’re also working with them to help get the word out about VIM work teams (which will begin around mid-June). Please expect further information about opportunities to serve in the conference newsletter soon. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity.

Miracle Offering – Kenya-Ethiopia Partnership

I write to remind you of another opportunity to be faithful and generous through our Annual Conference Miracle Offering to support the work of our mission partner in Kenya and Ethiopia. Our goal is $150,000. Approximately 100 congregations and pastors make up the conference, in a part of the world where the average wage is approx. $1 per hour.

International watch organizations continue to site lack of access to clean water, housing crises, and abundance of potentially preventable diseases for Ethiopia. Meanwhile, according to USAID, two-thirds of Kenyans live in poverty and are chronically vulnerable to food insecurity and preventable diseases. With wide distances to travel between local congregations, and economic insecurity in many local communities and among church members, our offering will have significant impact for the Conference and its ministries.

They need our help—and I know we can reach our goal. I look forward to announcing at our Annual Conference that we have given at least $150,000 to support our brothers and sisters in Kenya and Ethiopia in their Kingdom work.

Let me remind you of how our Miracle Offering will be used:

  • 6 motorcycles—these will be used by the Presiding Elders to itinerate in their circuits. The cost of each motorcycle is $1,500 for a total of $9,000
  • 1 used SUV vehicle to be used by the President Pro Tempore to give him dependable transportation as he itinerates across the country. Persons familiar with Kenya testify this is an absolute necessity. The cost for a used SUV is estimated to be $35,000.
  • Provide the mandatory classes including Global Methodist History, Polity, and Doctrine that 50 pastors in Kenya need to take before they can be ordained next year. The total estimated cost of providing the class for 50 clergy (which includes transportation, tuition, books, lodging, food, and registering the school with the country of Kenya) is $50,000.
  • Develop a cash reserve which we can use to be responsive to needs as they arise between sessions of the Annual Conference. The goal for seeding this fund is $56,000. We have a AWAC/Kenya-Ethiopia Partnership Team working on how to best use these funds—including responding to recent flooding in the region.

To strengthen our partnership, President Pro-Tempore Rev. Wilton Odongo, Rev. Bonface Wanyama, and Jacklyne Atotso Kezia will be in the US from May 16-30. They will be itinerating throughout the conference before and after being present at our Annual Conference at Mount Vernon Nazarene University May 22-25. They are here to forge relationships with our burgeoning partnership.

I’m calling on your generosity and stewardship to help make our Miracle Offering goal a reality. This offering is one of the many ways we can live out our Global Methodist Church vision to advance the Kingdom of God in every part of the world and at all levels of societies and cultures.

I believe our Annual Conference Miracle Offering Goal of $150,000 is attainable. When I look back at all the ways God has blessed our Conference journey, I am incredibly encouraged. Can you remember some of the financial obstacles that stood in the way during disaffiliation? I can remember some of the doubts and fears many of us had about coming up with the funds, but I also remember testimony after testimony of God’s faithfulness to make disaffiliation possible when we acted in faith.

The Kenya-Ethiopia Conference is acting in faith and working to advance our shared mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.

How to Give to the Miracle Offering

Just as we acted in faith to align with the Global Methodist Church, I encourage you to give your congregation the opportunity to give above and beyond your normal giving for this offering.

We will receive the Miracle Offering during evening worship at Annual Conference on Thursday, May 23.

If you are unable to be present, you can give online at AlleghenyWestGMC.org/Give. Click the Special Offering button and make your secure online contribution. In the field provided, select Miracle Offering to direct us to dedicate your contribution there.

You can also mail a check to Allegheny West GMC: 1636 Graham Road, Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068. Indicate Miracle Offering in the memo line.

I look forward to celebrating our faithfulness and generosity through this Miracle Offering.

I’m blessed and honored to serve with you!
